ETEN X500 GPS Short Review
Pocket PC Phone with Built-in GPS: Then New ETEN X500
ETEN announced the launch of a new Pocket PC Phone with built-in GPS, the glofiish X500. The company is promoting the device as the “world’s thinnest Pocket PC Phone” . Indeed, if you compare the ETEN X500 with the other Pocket PC Phones in the market (current and upcoming models), it is the thinnest Pocket PC Phone. In particular the ETEN X500 is 15.5mm (H) and the HTC P3600 is 18.4mm, the HTC P3300 is 16.8mm and the HTC TyTN is 21.9 mm. Of course there are thinner devices running windows mobile (Smartphones, not Pocket PC Phones) like the Samsung SGH-i320 which is only 11.5mm. The design of the phone is excellent and the specifications are really good.
First of all the device will have a Samsung SC3 2442 processor at 400MHz. This is much better than the TI’s OMAP™ 850 201 MHz of HTC P3300, a similar device with built-in GPS. From there one the memory is the “standard” 128 MB ROM, 64 MB RAM. In terms of connectivity the X500 offers GSM/EDGE Quad-band: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz , GPRS/EGPRS Class B and Bluetooth® v2.0 class 2 EDR and Wi-Fi b/g. The device does not support 3G neither does it have a QWERTY keyboard, but it is a slim and compact device with built-in GPS. When O2 Germany announced the O2 XDA Orbit we thought that this was one of the best devices (Thin and stylish design, wi-fi, bluetooth, FM Radio, GPS). The problem with the O2 XDA Orbit (HTC Artemis) is the slow processor of 200 MHZ. Recent reviews proved that 200 MHZ are not enough not only for SKYPE use but also for the most common pda functions. With the release of the ETEN X500 we expect that it will be a strong competitor of HTC P3300 (and other variations).
The HTC P3300 costs 440 GBP and the ETEN X500 is expected at 430 GBP. The released date is sometime in late November / early December 2006.
