Pocket PC Processors
Kruse Ludington ceo@krusecontrolsoftware.com

I am confused between say the Samsung SC3 2442 400 MHz and the Intel Xscale 416MHZ PA272 processors. I am patiently waiting for the fastest PPC Mobile phone, but have found no comparisons at all between the processors. Is the Samsung 400MHZ faster than the 520 Intel Xscale, or what ? How come nobody has been coming out with a workhorse PPC phone that has a screaming processor like 624MHZ? Were are any review comparing the different processor types? It ithe TI OMAP processor line a pile of junk, or... ? Kruse Ludington

Re: Pocket PC Processors
Dear Kruse,

Thank you for contacting mypocketpcmobile.com.

Regarding pocket pc processors what you say is true. Pocket PCs come with a different number of processors and it is a bit confusing as to which processor to choose or as to which processor is faster and better than the others. The simple answer to that it depends on what do you expect from a pocket pc. For example if you want a pocket pc to run SKYPE (among other things) then a pocket pc at 200 MHZ will make you life miserable. It will be so slow and you will hate it. If you don't have such "special" requirements then you will be fine with a 200mhz. Also it depends on how fast you want your pocket pc to response to applications. For example if you compare the -mate JAMin (TI OMAP 200MHZ) and the i-mate JAM (Intel PXA272 416 MHZ) you will notice that once you click the START button the JAM responds immediately while on the JAMin you have to wait some milliseconds. On the other hand, faster processors consume more battery while slower processor consume less, this means your battery life gets longer, something very important for pocket pcs that are used as phones. This is also one of the reasons companies do not release faster processors - battery life is an issue. Furthermore faster processors cost more than slow processors. Pocket pcs are not the cheapest mobiles around and the better processors will add to their prices and this is something companies do not want neither do we, the consumers.

As I said it depends on how you plan to use your pocket pc device. If you want fast response to whatever you do, and also want to run SKYPE, GPS navigator programmes, games then in our opinion choose a device with at least 400 MHZ processor (either Intel or Samsung). A good choice of a device with lots of functionality and good processor is ETEN X500.

I hope this gives you some light. As far as processor reviews is concerned this is a good idea and we will try to look into it further.

Thank you
