ASUS P735 - Pocket PC with 3G support

ASUS P735 Review - Pocket PC with 3G support

Right after the release of one of the best pocket pc devices in the market, the ASUS P535, ASUSTek Computer Inc. announced the release of a new Windows Mobile 5.0 pocket pc, the ASUS P735. The ASUS P735 has a design identical to the ASUS P535 but with a different set of specifications. The differences of ASUS P535 with ASUS P735 begin with the fact that the new device (P735) has support for 3G networks but does not have a built in GPS receiver. Next, the ASUS P735 will be equipped with the new Intel processor, Marvell XScale, running at 520 MHZ.

The ASUS P735 has the following dimesions 59 x 109 x 19 mm. It is a device that has a compact and stylish design. It may not be the thinnest pocket pc device in the market (it is 4mm thicker than ETEN X500!) but still its size and weight (143g) place the ASUS P735 among the smallest pocket pc devices around. The ergonomics of the device are very good. The 2.8-inch QVGA display (240 X 320 Resolution) is positioned on top of a set of buttons and a very handy navigation pad. The navigation pad used on the ASUS P735 is much better than the HTC Roll you can find on the HTC P3300. It is a solid component unlike the roll of the HTC P3300, which sometimes gives you the feeling that it is broken and very loose. On the left and right of the navpad you can find in a rectangular form the Windows Mobile keys on top and two buttons on the bottom. In the middle of the navpad there is the OK button. On top of the screen there is the multicolour activity indicator for Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and charging and a VGA camera used for Video Calling and for taking
self-portrait pictures. On the left of the device there is the dedicated camera button and the volume control. On the right hand side there is the HOLD button, a button for the voice volume and at the top the stylus placeholder. On the top of the device there is the miniSD expansion slot and the power button. On the bottom there is the miniUSB port that is used for charging and for connecting your pocket pc with a PC and the standard 2.5mm stereo headphone connector. Finally on the back of the device you can find the 2.0 mega pixel camera.

In terms of network connectivity the ASUS P735 has support for:

UMTS (WCDMA) 2100 MHz with 384 kbps UL/DL
GSM 900/1800/1900 MHz
GPRS Class B, Multi-slot Class 10

In addition there is built-in Wi-Fi (WLAN 802.11 b+g),USB v1.1 and Bluetooth v2.0. The bluetooth profiles on the ASUS P735 allows you to:

Connect to a hands free device
To Bluetooth headphones or stereo speakers
To connect to activesync
To browse files on a remote device (such as a PC)
To Connect to a network
To join a personal network (connection between two Bluetooth devices)
To exchange business cards with other Bluetooth phones
To connect and explore another bluetooth device
To connect a Bluetooth keyboard.

The software bundled with ASUS P735 will include (besides the Windows Mobile 5.0 software) a number of useful applications like The "My Secret". My Secret application is used to encrypt and protect sensitive documents away from unauthorized eyes when activated.

Profiler: With Profiler you can select which profile to use. You can select between normal – meeting – silent – automatic (based on calendar).

ASUS Status: It is a utility that can be used to display information about the cpu speed, usb, brightness, battery, storage on the today screen.the user up to date with the status of the device; and the Profile function avoids embarrassing rings during meetings.

The ASUS P735 is expected to very succesful because it combines a perfect design, a very powerfult set of connectivity options (3G,Wi-FI, Bluetooth) and one of the fastest processors available for Pocket PC devices at the moment. It is an alternative to ASUS P535 that does not have 3G support but it would be nice if the ASUS P735 also had a built-in GPS receiver.
